Black Swan Review

So I went to see Black Swan on Friday night at The Magnolia in Dallas. They only had one theater in the area showing the movie because it was only open in limited release this weekend. I had read some reviews of the movie that said it was to be a psychological thriller about Natalie Portman, who is cast as The Swan Queen in Swan Lake, and Mila Kunis who is trying to take her spot. When we arrived at the movie we about 15 minutes early we discovered everyone and their mom was at the theater. If you're planning to see it somewhere this weekend buy your tickets early and arrive early; trust me.

Anyway, during the opening credits my roommate recognized the name of the director, Darren Aronofsky, from his work on Requiem for a Dream and other utterly f*cked up movies. Excuse the language but there is honestly no other way to describe that movie. After she told me that's how she knew his name I knew I would be in for a wild ass ride with Black Swan. Regardless of my expectations I was in NO way prepared for that movie.

Grade- A! First let's start with whether or not I liked the movie, I did. It flowed nicely and in a very relevant way to the story that was being told. I am glad I went in knowing it was to be a psychological thriller because none of the other people I went to see the movie with did and it definitely left them a little bewildered. I definitely plan to see the movie again and that in and of itself says a lot about the movie. I believe The Dark Knight was the last movie I saw where I actually left the theater thinking "I MUST SEE THAT AGAIN!!" I just remember the whole time being so in awe of a movie entertaining me that much and of Heath Ledger's performance as the joker.

Natalie Portman- Speaking of performances, I usually try to avoid the whole "this person deserves an Oscar" spiel but MY GOD Natalie Portman deserves one! At the very least she deserves a nomination because her performance was SPECTACULAR. I have never been let down by a performance from her in the past but this was just completely different than anything I'd ever seen. The way she embodied that character was brilliant. It made me appreciate her as an actress even more. As a side note Mila Kunis and Barbara Hershey, who plays Portman's mother, definitely deserve some accolades for their portrayals as well. Brilliant casting with this movie. I now appreciate good casting so much more after the debacle that was/is The Twilight Saga. Although, that's neither here nor there. Ha!

Story- Great. I think the reason this story works so well is because when you get down to the core of it, it was a very simple plot. It helped all the psychological action and the performances from the cast shine through. Another testament to this movie, after watching it I now have a strong desire to go to the ballet! If I had to some up the plot in 3 words I would say surprising, random, and simple. It worked and not only that it was exactly what was needed to tell this story. It was a good kind of simple so the audience wasn't completely lost in all the madness that was surrounding them but at the same time you don't figure everything out in the first 10 minutes. That is a huge problem in movies nowadays and I can't stand it. Well, that and the fact that every other fing moving being made is in 3D! Again, that's neither here nor there. ;)

All in all it was a very good movie. It definitely made me think and it kept my attention which is hard to do. I can't wait to see it again and I recommend it to others. After all the INSANITY that was Inception I'm very reluctant to recommend movies or proclaim them "the best movie ever" because that's just SO subjective. I think a certain time of person/crowd will appreciate the brilliant concept/acting/directing of this movie and other won't get it or simply won't like it. I do think it's a movie worth checking out though! Below are a couple of pics from the movie. Hope yall have a great weekend and if Black Swan is playing in your area go see it before it becomes even more hyped!

Wake Me When My Prince Arrives

Let's just say it was VERY hard to get up this morning.

Yesterday my roommate asked me if I'd ever had one of those weeks that you think will never end. Um, YES, I screamed! I think were both having that kind of week. The fact that it's Friday and we only have exactly two more weeks until our vacation is also not helping things much. This morning I actually snoozed my alarm and fell back asleep. The only reason I woke up is because I heard the door close when my roommate left. After dragging myself out of of bed I decided 16 oz Red Bull was the only way I was going to survive. I'm currently still sipping on that Red Bull and I can tell you these alleged wings it's supposed to give me have yet to arrive!

In other news, I've decided to go see Black Swan tonight. It's in limited release at one theater in Dallas and I'm very excited about it! I want to see it before everyone else does because I hate when things are over-hyped. I'd like to see it before the masses and form my own opinion on the movie. It's been getting a lot of good reviews and Natalie Portman can pretty much do no wrong in my book so I'm very excited about this! I read that they wanted Natalie to have some dance technique and have a dancer's body so she trained 8 hours a day for a year and actually lost 20 lbs. That's insane to me but very impressive. Irregardless, (Again, I know it's not a word I just love using it! Haha. Thanks again Mean Girls!) it should be fun times for all!

Here's a pic of her from the movie. LOVE!

Anyway I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! I'll recap my thoughts on Black Swan at some point tomorrow or Sunday! Enjoy your Friday and as always here's a little pretty to end the post! :)

The social network

The Social Network movie was fantastic if you're a facebook addict! And I'm sure many of you out there are addicts =p

It was a very intriguing story on how facebook came about- the origins and the creator. It was very informative...I mean all of us facebook without knowing actually who is the creator, how he created it and why, right?

We just use it because most of our friends or rather all of our friends are facebook-ing. But this show provides an insight on how it all came about. Mark Zuckerberg, the creator went through many ups and downs and a few law suits later turn out to become a successful entrepreneur that he is today(mostly because of us spending large amount of time on his website *laughs*)

I highly recommend this movie. It'll be a whole new world when you come out of the cinema knowing so much about the website you're so hooked at for the past years!

New toilet

You know how it is when a new toilet is just built and everyone wants to see how clean and nice it is? Well, the very same applies to supermarkets.

Giant, Kemuning Utama just opened yesterday(2nd December) and boy were there 'giant' amount of people. It was ridiculous! Like people haven't seen Giant before and were buying trolley load of stuffs *laughs*

I, for one really hate human traffic and because whicever part of the supermarket I went, I was pushed around. And I was there at 10pm and there were still thousands of people buying stuffs! What the! Therefore, I decided not to buy anything because the queue was super long and just went into a magazine shop and read some magazines LOL

This is what I call the 'new toilet' syndrome =p Just about everyone wants to experience first hand how the new Giant was- even ME!

Well, morale of the story is, don't ever go to some new supermarket on the very first opening. Go at least on the second day because guess what? The 'new toilet' syndrome dies off on the second day and now there is a significant drop in traffic around Giant today *laughs*

#1 Lesson from The VSFashionShow...Food Is Unnecessary!

So last night was the glittery extravaganza known as The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show!! While the show wasn't as great as previous ones I did love watching and thought it would be fun to recap with pics from the show and my thoughts after watching.

1. The models don't eat. No really, they don't eat. I'd say 8 out of 10 models looked too skinny and coming from me that's saying a lot! I love a skinny bitch as much as the next girl but those hos needed to eat a sandwich or 50.
2. I miss the golden days! Heidi, Giselle, Tyra etc...
3. Chanel Iman is too adorable for words. I literally want to scoop her up and put her in my pocket!
4. It's very irritating that you can't buy 98% of the things they show on the runway. I am specifically speaking of this Flashdance-esque blue/pink EXTRA sparkly sweatshirt. I died when I saw it and OF COURSE can't find it on the site for purchasing!
5. I think there are perhaps too many segments with wings in them. The wings are special and should have one or two segments of the show but it becomes overkill when every other girl has them.
6. KATY.PERRY.RUINS.EVERYTHING. She is so annoying and I was so sick of seeing her perform. SO SICK.
7. Speaking of performances, I could do without them.
8. Half naked gymnasts was a lovely addition to the show.
9. I feel it needs to be said again, the models are WAY TOO SKINNY
10. Every man in Hollywood was at that damn show!
11. I'm extremely jealous of the model dating the front man in Kings of Leon. SOOOO jealous!
12. The stylist for the show did a fantastic job! I especially enjoyed the shoes featured on the runway.
13. The gold runway covered in glitter made me so happy. SO very happy.
14. Miranda Kerr and Marissa Miller were missed, by me anyway.

All in all it was a good show and I was entertained. I do think that lingerie looks better on women with curves. I'm not saying super thick but some of the models looked like 12 yr old boys and that's really not sexy. Here's a link to a Fashion Show Blog from an insider, working for VS, at the show. It has a couple of pics backstage and is a cute little read. All in all I'd give it a solid B+ and can't wait til next year!
