So last night was the prom episode of Glee and it was kind of the final straw in a string of episodes this season that have made me scratch my head and wonder what the hell is going on. When Glee first started I remember saying that it was the most refreshing show I'd seen in a long time. It gave me the same feeling I got when I watched the first episode of The OC. It was something unlike anything else I had seen on TV and I loved that. The writing was refreshing and the musical numbers had a bit of an organic quality. The show just flowed seamlessly from musical numbers to dialogue and I really loved it. Over this past season, which was split into two parts, something has happened to the show I grew to love. The musical numbers are these out of control productions, the writing is suffering, and all in all the show is just kind of blah. So I present a couple of things Glee could do to get back to the show I love!

Stop Focusing on Current Pop Hits- During the prom episode last night Glee thought it would be fun to sing "Friday". I guess since everyone has been talking about it they thought it would be fun. It had been promoted for weeks that they were going to sing it and I feel like the only reason they sang it was to get ratings. I had never heard the song until last night's episode and I liked it that way. During the first season of the show they sang a wide range of songs. Some of the songs were current pop hits but a lot were a few years old or even a few decades old. It was nice because you never really knew what song they would sing on the show and that aspect has been lost. Now, all I have to do is look at the billboard charts and I can pretty much see a list of songs they will perform on the show. This brings me to my second piece of advice.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP SINGING ADELE SONGS- I thought nothing could be worse than Gwyneth Paltrow singing "Turning Tables" but I was SO wrong. Rachel and that dude from New Directions whose name escapes me, (Jesse! That's it!), version of Rolling In the Deep was the WORST cover that show has ever done. I was actually angry after I heard it. I wanted to crawl into the TV and punch both of them in the face for RUINING that song. Adele has one of the most unique voices I have ever heard and no one on Glee can do her justice. Let me repeat this for you, NO ONE ON GLEE CAN DO HER JUSTICE. So let's just stop trying then.

Enough with the Stunt Casting- Stunt casting ruins shows, the end. Look at Will & Grace and How I Met Your Mother. Both were hilarious shows that kind of took a turn for the worse with stunt casting. The occasional guest star is fine and sometimes provides a breath of fresh air to a show but every other episode having a big name star gets annoying. Glee has had entirely too many this season and apparently everyone from Anne Hathaway to Jennifer Lopez are still set to appear in the coming seasons. I'm sick of it. The main problem with stunt casting is the writing suffers. Writers have to write idiotic story lines to fit the guest appearances and that leads to asinine plots and episodes. You cast the show one way for a reason so let's utilize the cast members you have. I mean they've added 3-4 new members so there's really no need for all the extra stunt casting too.

This Is a High School Glee Club NOT Broadway- Ummmmmmmm I find it hard to believe that this Glee club that is struggling to get money to fly to New York has enough money for all the elaborate performances they put on. The picture above was from their performance of Singing In the Rain/Umbrella and it was RIDICULOUS! All the songs they sing sound like they came out of the best recording studio around and the music has lost that great organic sound it had in the beginning. For the most part the entire cast can sing (I'm still on the fence about Finn) and I would like to hear more of their voices in performances and less sound effects. Also, let us try and remember they are supposed to be in high school so all the props etc... should be toned down a bit.

EVERY, SINGLE, EPISODE Does NOT Need To Be A PSA- OK, let me preface this by saying I am an EXTREME supporter of equality for all people. That goes for heterosexuals, homosexuals, short, tall, purple, brown, black, blonde, brunette, male, female, whatever. That being said, almost every episode of Glee for part 2 of this season has centered on gay rights. One or two episodes is fine because one of the main characters is gay and it makes sense but they need to go about it in a different way. The show has taken the 7th Heaven route of basically preaching to the audience and it is getting VERY annoying. I think if it fits what is happening then sure but not every episode of a show that is supposed to be light hearted and fun needs to have this heavy, preachy, quality to it. Enough is enough.
It seems to me that Glee started out as Emma Stone, by that I mean, an underestimated, awesome, show that came out of nowhere and pretty much rocked! Now, it has turned into Miley Cyrus. It is trying too hard to get noticed and running around half naked screaming look at me! I'm over it. So I'm gonna need Ryan Murphy and the execs over at Fox to get with the program and fix it! And while we're at it, can we go ahead and stop giving Finn solos. Thanks!
