Black Swan Review

So I went to see Black Swan on Friday night at The Magnolia in Dallas. They only had one theater in the area showing the movie because it was only open in limited release this weekend. I had read some reviews of the movie that said it was to be a psychological thriller about Natalie Portman, who is cast as The Swan Queen in Swan Lake, and Mila Kunis who is trying to take her spot. When we arrived at the movie we about 15 minutes early we discovered everyone and their mom was at the theater. If you're planning to see it somewhere this weekend buy your tickets early and arrive early; trust me.

Anyway, during the opening credits my roommate recognized the name of the director, Darren Aronofsky, from his work on Requiem for a Dream and other utterly f*cked up movies. Excuse the language but there is honestly no other way to describe that movie. After she told me that's how she knew his name I knew I would be in for a wild ass ride with Black Swan. Regardless of my expectations I was in NO way prepared for that movie.

Grade- A! First let's start with whether or not I liked the movie, I did. It flowed nicely and in a very relevant way to the story that was being told. I am glad I went in knowing it was to be a psychological thriller because none of the other people I went to see the movie with did and it definitely left them a little bewildered. I definitely plan to see the movie again and that in and of itself says a lot about the movie. I believe The Dark Knight was the last movie I saw where I actually left the theater thinking "I MUST SEE THAT AGAIN!!" I just remember the whole time being so in awe of a movie entertaining me that much and of Heath Ledger's performance as the joker.

Natalie Portman- Speaking of performances, I usually try to avoid the whole "this person deserves an Oscar" spiel but MY GOD Natalie Portman deserves one! At the very least she deserves a nomination because her performance was SPECTACULAR. I have never been let down by a performance from her in the past but this was just completely different than anything I'd ever seen. The way she embodied that character was brilliant. It made me appreciate her as an actress even more. As a side note Mila Kunis and Barbara Hershey, who plays Portman's mother, definitely deserve some accolades for their portrayals as well. Brilliant casting with this movie. I now appreciate good casting so much more after the debacle that was/is The Twilight Saga. Although, that's neither here nor there. Ha!

Story- Great. I think the reason this story works so well is because when you get down to the core of it, it was a very simple plot. It helped all the psychological action and the performances from the cast shine through. Another testament to this movie, after watching it I now have a strong desire to go to the ballet! If I had to some up the plot in 3 words I would say surprising, random, and simple. It worked and not only that it was exactly what was needed to tell this story. It was a good kind of simple so the audience wasn't completely lost in all the madness that was surrounding them but at the same time you don't figure everything out in the first 10 minutes. That is a huge problem in movies nowadays and I can't stand it. Well, that and the fact that every other fing moving being made is in 3D! Again, that's neither here nor there. ;)

All in all it was a very good movie. It definitely made me think and it kept my attention which is hard to do. I can't wait to see it again and I recommend it to others. After all the INSANITY that was Inception I'm very reluctant to recommend movies or proclaim them "the best movie ever" because that's just SO subjective. I think a certain time of person/crowd will appreciate the brilliant concept/acting/directing of this movie and other won't get it or simply won't like it. I do think it's a movie worth checking out though! Below are a couple of pics from the movie. Hope yall have a great weekend and if Black Swan is playing in your area go see it before it becomes even more hyped!

Cupcakes&Kisses-B!

* I'm also now OBSESSED with being a Black Swan for Halloween!
