Today's Rant Is Brought To You By The Letter O...

Today, O stands for OVERUSED TERMS!!!!
Lately, it's been bothering the amount of celebrity authors/designers that have been coming out. If you can't sew and/or sketch you really aren't a designer and if you used a ghostwriter for your book you are not an author. It's really that simple. Let us begin the rant with authors since books are close to my heart!

au·thor   [aw-ther] Show IPA
–noun
1. a person who writes a novel, poem, essay, etc.; the composer of a literary work, as distinguished from a compiler, translator, editor, or copyist.
2. the literary production or productions of a writer: to find a passage in an author.
3. the maker of anything; creator; originator: the author of a new tax plan.

Let's go ahead and look at that definition and let it soak in to our minds. Notice how none of them include telling someone else your ideas while they write them down. I especially enjoy number 3 because that's how I feel about anything I write. I am the creator/originator of that work. I take pride in that and I feel one should not call themselves an author if that is not the case.

While I don't necessarily mind the use of a ghostwriter there is something about it that at times, rubs me the wrong way. I think my main issue is the rise in 'celebrity' books coming out. Snooki writing (and I use that term loosely) a book was the final straw for me and what inspired this rant! I mean COME ON PEOPLE! If a ghostwriter wrote over 50% of your book then you are not an author my friend. In my opinion if you used one for over 5% of your book you're not an author; to be honest, I kind of feel as if you honestly shouldn't use one at all. I mean it seems very simple to me, if you didn't write the book, you're not an author. I mean this makes sense to people right?!! I just think we should stop throwing around the word author when these people are in fact, not authors! I don't mind celebrities writing books but WRITE THE DAMN BOOK!

I listed a couple of celebrity books above and all of them used ghostwriters. I do think Lauren Conrad wrote a bigger portion of her book than most but she did admit to having help. Hilary Duff's book, while very good, is listed under the ghostwriters name at the public library in my city. That means, my dear Hilary, you had pretty much nothing to do with that book. The only book I'm unsure of is Priceless, I remember hearing she had help with the first book but I'm not sure about this one. Most of these, I'm excluding Paris and Pam's books because I haven't read that nonsense, are good books but I just think credit should be given to the ghostwriter.

I saw this on Twitter this morning and it's so true!! It makes me very sad too.

It was recently brought to my attention that Ralph Lauren can't sew. WTF!!

de·sign·er   [dih-zahy-ner]
–noun
1.a person who devises or executes designs, esp. one who creates forms, structures, and patterns, as for works of art or machines.

I mean that is straight to the point. I'm not sure how one can say they are the designer of clothing when they don't sketch or sew! I mean really, how does that work? It's one thing to not be able to sew it's another to not even be able to sketch! What exactly do you do then? Do you go up to the actual designers and say oh I like pink and ruffles so sketch me a dress, then make it, and I'll take all the credit. That makes NO SENSE!! You may have great style(more like a great stylist) but I don't think that qualifies you to call yourself a designer. Above are some pictures from 'celebrities' that have clothing lines or have designed for another fashion company. I use the term 'designed' loosely. In the end a person can call themselves whatever they like but just because I call myself The Queen of Sheeba doesn't mean I am.

*I realize some pics are off but oh well. Sometimes thats just how baseball go!
